Fair use

What unlimited means

DNS queries and API reads are unlimited on every plan, whatever a hostname carries - a name answering TXT records costs the same as one answering an address. We do not meter or bill them.

We reserve the right to throttle or apply a limit where it is needed to keep the service available for everyone.

What fair use covers

This policy covers attacks and platform abuse: denial of service against our nameservers, using the API as a storage or exfiltration channel, evading rate limits across accounts, and hosting infrastructure for phishing or malware.

Hard limits

• Registration writes (creating, updating, or releasing hostnames) carry hard technical rate limits per API key, with a burst allowance and a sustained rate.
• Each plan has a published cap on how many hostnames you hold at once, and releasing one frees its slot. The current caps appear on the pricing page.
• Hostname updates and record writes carry rate limits per team. The current values are in the API reference.
• 10 records per hostname, on every plan. A TXT value is split into 255-byte strings, up to 2048 bytes in total.

Enforcement

Where the problem is load, enforcement follows a ladder, in order: automated mitigation first, then notice to the account, then suspension. An account running hot gets a chance to fix it.

Conduct does not get the ladder. Where we believe on reasonable grounds that an account is being used for what section 3 of the terms prohibits, we suspend it immediately and investigate afterwards, and hostnames used for phishing or malware are taken down as soon as we see them. Suspension is reversible: we tell you what happened, and we lift it if the concern does not hold up.
